Gas Saving Tips and Suggestions


We have all seen the price of gasoline shooting up to record levels around the country with no relief in sight. In some states it has already reached, and passed, record levels. Reports of gas thefts from parked cars and fill and flies (people going to a gas station, filling up and driving off without paying) are increasing everyday.

What can we, as consumers, do about it? Unfortunately, there is not too much we can do. We either pay or walk. But there is one thing we can do, and that is to squeeze every mile we can out of every gallon of gas we buy. There are a number of things we can do to keep our vehicles running in top shape and get the best mileage we can. Other ways are by changing the way we drive.

Tire Pressures

One thing we can do to stretch our gallon of gas is to check our tire pressures.

Low tire pressure will make the tires drag and use more gas. Look in your owners' manual and see what the recommended tire pressures are. Add two pounds to that number, but never exceed 35 psi. That will add about 1 mile per gallon. Check them every time you gas up. Think of it as adding an extra ½ gallon to your tank for free.

Keep Your Engine Tuned

Keeping your engine well tuned is another good way to stretch your gas dollar. An engine that grinds for ten seconds before firing up wastes enough gas to take you two miles. Maybe it's time for a new set of spark plugs and a new air filter. Now is a good time to go get them. Also have a mechanic bump the timing a degree or two if possible.

Clean Out Your Trunk

Look in the trunk of your car. Are those two bags of sand that you used for extra traction last winter still in there? Take them out! It's excess weight in the summer and excess weight uses gas. What ever you don't need in there, take it out and lighten the load. It will come back as extra miles per tank full.

Think About The Vehicle You Use

If you are a two car family, use the cars wisely. If one has to drive further to work, let that person use the car that gets the best mileage. On weekends switch around depending on who's running the errands. Do you really need to drive that big gas sucking SUV? They are all right if you need to move the kids' soccer team, but driving it to work is a waste. Consider a more fuel-efficient vehicle for commuting.

Shop For Price

If you see three or four gas stations on a corner, check all the prices. They will be competing for your business and will generally have the lowest prices. Don't drive across town just to save one or two cents a gallon. You'll wind up using more gas than you save. Unless you can save eight to ten cents a gallon, it's just not worth it. Keep an eye on prices as you drive around and if you see a lower price, take advantage of it.

Make Sure You Use The Correct Fuel

If your car uses regular gas don't waste money on buying premium, if you don't have to. You won't get any better mileage or performance and you'll just waste that extra ten or fifteen cents a gallon. Check your owner's manual to see if your engine does need premium.

Take Time Of Day Into Consideration

If possible, stagger your work hours to avoid rush hour traffic. Sitting in stop and go traffic is the biggest waste of fuel there is. Try leaving home for work a little earlier. You'll avoid some traffic and impress your boss.

Cut Down On The Use Of The Air Conditioning

A/C takes about 8 horsepower to run and those horses eat gas. Our forefathers crossed a whole country without A/C, I think we can cross town without it. On a long trip on the open highway, it is better to use the A/C than to drive with the windows open. The extra drag of open windows on a vehicle can eat up more fuel than the A/C will.

Avoid Jackrabbit Starts

Start off smooth and accelerate easy to your cruising speed and maintain it. Use your cruise control if you have it to maintain a steady speed. Slow down a bit when you drive, the faster you go, the more fuel you use. When you go somewhere, leave 10 or 15 minutes earlier so you can go easy and save some fuel. Who knows, you might even notice things you never saw before when you were passing by at the higher speed.

Reduce Trips To The Store

Partners can save gas by shopping at a big grocery warehouse such as a Sam's Club once a month or so. You can stock up on non-perishable and frozen items and pick up milk, bread or other small items on the way home from work. Not only will you save money on gas, but also your grocery bills will be lower.

I go to Sams club once every two months and stock up and get my fill in items at the grocery store that's right on my route home.

Consolidate Your Errands

Plan out what you have to do and go from one to the other in the shortest distance. This is a case where putting something off until tomorrow can be a good thing if it will save you distance and time. Avoid the drive thru when you go to the bank, park your car and go inside instead of wasting gas standing in line. Do the same when you go to Burger King and McDonalds.

I can say whatever you do to save gas is good for the country, and don't get me wrong, it is. But the bottom line is this; it's money in your pocket. It's money you save. It's money you can spend. If you can get an extra 3 miles per gallon, and the average car has a 15-gallon gas tank, which translates to 45 miles per tank full. If you fill up your tank once a week, that's 2,340 miles per year. That's an average of 117 gallons of fuel at $2.00 a gallon equaling $234.00. If you follow the suggestions I have outlined above, you'll get five, six, even seven extra miles per gallon.


Understanding Fuel Economy Ratings

Recently, I had a long-time customer come in with her new car, complaining about her gas mileage. It was a 2000 model year car with about 9000 miles on it. She said that the window sticker said the gas mileage was 27 miles per gallon in the city and 34 on the highway. She said that the best she ever got with it was 19 mpg. She wanted to know if there was something wrong with her car and whether she should bring it back to the dealer to have it looked at.

Like many other people, she misunderstood what those numbers actually mean. It's not only important to have information; it's just as important to understand what that information means. In this case, the numbers are not going to tell you what your gas mileage will be; it is just an indication of the relative fuel economy of the vehicle.

Okay, so what do those numbers on the window sticker mean and how do they arrive at them?

The only intended use of these values is for comparison among the different vehicles. Fuel economy estimates are generated from data taken during a laboratory test using pre-production prototype vehicles under extremely controlled conditions using a professional driver, with the vehicle operating on an instrument similar to a treadmill. The comparison of current vehicle fuel economy to the EPA fuel economy estimates is to let you compare apples to apples.

The EPA GAS MILEAGE GUIDE, available at each dealership, points out that the actual mileage when driving a vehicle may differ considerably from the estimated mileage. The guide also describes how vehicles are tested under identical conditions to ensure that the results can be compared with confidence.

The EPA GAS MILEAGE GUIDE also points out that the city fuel economy estimate simulates a 7.5 mile stop-and-go trip with an average speed of 20 mph. The trip takes 23 minutes and has 18 stops. About 18 percent of the time is spent idling, as in waiting at traffic lights or in rush hour traffic. Two kinds of engine starts are used: the cold start, which is similar to starting a car in the morning after it has been parked all night, and the hot start, similar to restarting a vehicle after it has been warmed up, driven and stopped for a short time.

The test to determine the highway fuel economy estimate represents a mixture of "non-city" driving. Segments corresponding to different kinds of rural roads and interstate highways are included. The test simulates a 10-mile trip and averages 48 mph. The test is run from a hot start and has little idling time and no stops.

The EPA GAS MILEAGE GUIDE explains that the actual test results are adjusted downward to arrive at the estimates used in the booklet and on the labels. City estimates are lowered by 10 percent and the highway estimate by 22 percent from the laboratory test results. The guide also points out that traveling at higher speeds lowers fuel economy and traveling at 65 mph instead of 55 mph lowers fuel economy over 15 percent.

Factors that affect fuel economy...

Axle Ratio:
Numerically ower axle ratios generally produce better highway fuel economy. The exception to this is if the engine is "working" exceptionally hard (heavy vehicle loads pulling a trailer, small engine in a large vehicle, etc.). In these cases, a numerically higher axle may provide better fuel economy. Numerically higher axle ratios will also tend to provide more fuel economy in congested city traffic and stop-and-go conditions.

Brakes:
Brake drag (even a minimal amount undetectable by coasting) can have a significant negative impact on fuel economy. Pull upward on the brake pedal to assure that the stoplight switch and cruise switch at the brake pedal are full and properly adjusted.

A "click" sound when the pedal is pulled upward indicates that the switch was improperly adjusted. This causes the front brake pads to lightly rub the rotors, causing a fuel economy loss, without generating excessive heat or brake pad wear.

Driving Habits:
Frequent short trips (less than five miles), especially in cooler ambient temperatures (less than 65 degrees), will necessitate fuel enrichment on start-ups, especially after "soaks" with the engine off for approximately a half an hour or more.

Frequent accelerator pedal movement while driving will reduce fuel economy because of fuel enrichment during the periods of acceleration. Under such driving conditions, the torque converter clutch (TCC) also disengages, contributing to fuel economy losses. Prolonged idle periods reduce fuel economy, especially in cold ambient temperatures when vehicle is allowed to "warm up."

Fuels:
Oxygenated fuels, with methanol and/or ethanol blended into the gasoline, have lower energy and thus reduce fuel economy. Typically, there is about a 1-mpg penalty for a vehicle that gets 25 to 30 MPG on 100 percent gasoline.

Using fuels of a lower octane than the vehicle was calibrated to will cause increased "Knock Sensor (KS)" system activity. This will result in a net decrease in spark advance and thus poorer fuel economy. Using fuel of a higher octane than the vehicle was calibrated for WILL NOT increase fuel economy.

Variations in how much fuel is added to the fuel tank during re-fueling can greatly affect calculated fuel economy. These effects decrease as the distance traveled and the number of tank fill ups increase.

New Engines:
New vehicles have not yet had an opportunity for the engine to break in (rings to seat, etc.). A typical engine will take three to five thousand miles to break in, and during this time period a gradual increase in fuel economy can be expected.

Parasitic Loads:
Air conditioning and/or electrical loads (headlights, heated back glass, etc.) also result in lower fuel economy (typically less than 1 mpg difference, each 10 Amps takes approximately .4 mpg).

Road Conditions:
Road surface condition impacts fuel economy. Gravel and/or pot holed roads decrease fuel economy. Hills (vs. level terrain) also negatively impact fuel economy. Even gradual imperceptible increases in elevation result in real measurable decreases in fuel economy. Similarly, driving in the rain or snow decreases fuel economy.

Suspension:
Vehicle suspension misalignment can cause poor fuel economy. Check all four tires for abnormal and/or premature tire wear. New tires, tire rotation, and/or front-end alignment may be required to correct fuel economy.

Tires:
Performance tires and/or tires with larger "contact areas" (like 60 series aspect ratio), can cause as much as 3-mpg lower fuel economy when compared to hard "thin" tires. Find out if the tire size currently on the car is the same as original equipment. Replacement tires taller than original equipment tires cause the odometer to read LESS THAN actual distance traveled. This will result in lower calculated fuel economy than actual fuel economy.

Tire Pressure:
Harder tires (more air pressure, or different tire compositions) result in better fuel economy. Do not exceed maximum pressure as labeled on the tire, typically 30-35 psi. The disadvantage of this is that the greater the tire pressure, the harsher the vehicle rides.

Though most of the cars on this list are imports, that doesn't mean the domestics don't built fuel-efficient cars -- though it's no coincidence that the fuel-efficient Focus was largely designed by Ford's European division. The Focus' fuel economy trails a bit compared to Japanese compacts, but it's cheap to buy, brimming with personality and enjoyable to drive.

2. Honda Fit

The Fit is one of several minicars to hit American (and Canadian) streets in recent months, but few, if any, do such a good job of divvying up space between front seats, back seats and cargo bay. Thoughtful engineering gives the Fit gobs of interior space, including room for tall drivers, and it delivers excellent fuel economy in the real world, not just on paper.

3. Honda Civic

When it comes to squeezing every last inch of motion out of a drop of gasoline, no one does it like Honda. A 40 MPG highway figure makes the Civic the most thrifty automatic-transmission-equipped non-hyrbid car on this list. It's an amazing feat considering the Civic's acres of interior room and full complement of safety features. And if that isn't enough, Honda does, indeed, offer a hybrid version of the Civic.

4. Mercedes-Benz E320 BLUETEC

If everyone in the US got the chance to test-drive a Mercedes E320 BLUETEC, I bet the demand for diesel cars would go through the roof. With its 3-liter V6 powerplant, the E320 BLUETEC offers the passing power of a V8 with the fuel economy of a compact sedan -- pretty impressive for a car this big and luxurious. With a price premium of only $1,000 over the gasoline-powered version and significantly better fuel economy, the E320 BLUETEC just makes sense.


5. MINI Cooper

The MINI Cooper has already earned a reputation for being fun to drive and remarkably spacious considering its pint-sized interior. A new version introduced in 2007 features a new 1.6 liter engine derived by BMW, MINI's parent company. Thanks to the new engine, the base-model MINI Cooper is more powerful, more fuel efficient, and produces cleaner tailpipe emissions.

6. Nissan Altima

The four-cylinder Nissan Altima's EPA fuel estimates are becoming of a small car, but the Altima is anything but small. And the four-cylinder version is anything but gutless -- it has a big 2.5 liter engine that packs a health 180 lb-ft of torque. Best yet, it uses a continuously variable automatic transmission, which wrings more power out of the engine than a conventional automatic while scoring fuel economy similar to a manual. A great choice for those who need a mid-size car and are looking to save money on fuel.

7. Nissan Sentra

Common wisdom says that if you want the best fuel economy you should buy a car with a manual transmission. That's not true anymore; many automatics get similar or better fuel economy than their manual counterparts (see the Honda Civic, above). But the Nissan Sentra takes goes one step futher with its continously-variable automatic transmission (CVT). The CVT Sentra not only gets better fuel economy than a manual, it also feels more powerful -- plus it comes wrapped in a roomy and handsome compact sedan that's easy to live with.

8. Toyota Camry Hybrid

When America's best-selling car adapts hybrid technology, you know it's here to stay. Unlike the Prius, the Camry presents an altogether conventional driving experience. Its bigger (2.4 liter) engine and conventional tires, among other factors, yield fuel economy that's lower than a Prius, but a darn sight better than regular Camrys -- and it's so transparent you can easily forget it's a hybrid.


9. Toyota Corolla

With all those hybrids in the Toyota family, not to mention the hybrid version of its arch-nemesis, the Honda Civic, it's easy to forget that the Corolla is a remarkably economic car in its own right, even in automatic guise, provided you stick with the smaller 1.8 liter engine. Completely redesigned for 2009, the n Corolla is roomy, well trimmed out, affordable, and unbelievably reliable -- plus it boasts fuel economy equal to or greater than many subcompacts. Impressive!

10. Toyota Prius

The Prius will be remembered as the car that put hybrids on the map. But even if you put fuel economy aside, the Prius is still a great car. The hatchback body makes it excessively practical, and the Buck Rogers interior is a nice change from the typical car interior that's both futuristic and easy to get used to. Expect real-world fuel economy of around 45 MPG, which is pretty darn good for a car this roomy.

Top 10 Fuel Saving Tips


Whether you drive a two-seat hybrid or a three-ton SUV, chances are you can squeeze a bit more distance out of each gallon of fuel -- and at today's gas prices, an improvement of just one or two miles per gallon (MPG) can really add up. These ten fuel saving tips have served me well over the years, and they can help you improve your car's fuel economy and take some of the sting out of high fuel prices. Most of these tips will give you a very slight increase in MPG -- but use several together and the gas mileage improvements will really add up.

1. Slow down

One of the best ways to save gas is to simply reduce your speed. As speed increases, fuel economy decreases exponentially. If you one of the "ten-over on the freeway" set, try driving the speed limit for a few days. You'll save a lot of fuel and your journey won't take much longer. (Just be sure you keep to the right, so you won't impede the less-enlightened.)

2. Check your tire pressure

Under-inflated tires are one of the most commonly ignored causes of crummy MPG. Tires lose air due to time (about 1 psi per month) and temperature (1 psi for every 10 degree drop); under-inflated tires have more rolling resistance, which means you need to burn more gas to keep your car moving. Buy a reliable tire gauge and check your tires at least once a month. Be sure to check them when they are cold, since driving the car warms up the tires along with the air inside them, which increases pressure and gives a falsely high reading. Use the inflation pressures shown in the owner's manual or on the data plate in the driver's door jamb.

3. Check your air filter

A dirty air filter restricts the flow of air into the engine, which harms performance and economy. Air filters are easy to check and change; remove the filter and hold it up to the sun. If you can't see light coming through it, you need a new one. Consider a K&N or similar "permanent" filter which is cleaned rather than changed; they are much less restrictive than throw-away paper filters, plus they're better for the environment.

4. Accelerate with care

Jack-rabbit starts are an obvious fuel-waster -- but that doesn't mean you should crawl away from every light. If you drive an automatic, accelerate moderately so the transmission can shift up into the higher gears. Stick-shifters should shift early to keep the revs down, but don't lug the engine -- downshift if you need to accelerate. Keep an eye well down the road for potential slowdowns. If you accelerate to speed then have to brake right away, that's wasted fuel.

5. Hang with the trucks

Ever notice how, in bad traffic jams, cars seem to constantly speed up and slow down, while trucks tend to roll along at the same leisurely pace? A constant speed keeps shifting to a minimum -- important to those who have to wrangle with those ten-speed truck transmissions -- but it also aids economy, as it takes much more fuel to get a vehicle moving than it does to keep it moving. Rolling with the big rigs saves fuel (and aggravation).

6. Get back to nature

Consider shutting off the air conditioner, opening the windows and enjoying the breeze. It may be a tad warmer, but at lower speeds you'll save fuel. That said, at higher speeds the A/C may be more efficient than the wind resistance from open windows and sunroof. If I'm going someplace where arriving sweaty and smelly could be a problem, I bring an extra shirt and leave early so I'll have time for a quick change.

7. Back off the bling

New wheels and tires may look cool, and they can certainly improve handling. But if they are wider than the stock tires, chances are they'll create more rolling resistance and decrease fuel economy. If you upgrade your wheels and tires, keep the old ones. I have fancy sport rims and aggressive tires on my own car, but I keep the stock wheels with a good narrower-tread performance tire in the garage. For long road trips, the stock wheels give a smoother ride and better economy.

8. Clean out your car

If you're the type who takes a leisurely attitude towards car cleanliness -- and I definitely fall into that category -- periodically go through your car and see what can be tossed out or brought into the house. It doesn't take much to acquire an extra 40 or 50 lbs. of stuff, and the more weight your car has to lug around, the more fuel it burns.

9. Downsize

If you're shopping for a new car, it's time to re-evaluate how much car you really need. Smaller cars are inherently more fuel-efficient, and today's small cars are roomier than ever -- one of my favorite subcompacts, the Nissan Versa, has so much interior room that the EPA classifies it as a mid-size. Worried about crash protection? The automakers are designing their small cars to survive crashes with bigger vehicles, and safety features like side-curtain airbags and electronic stability control are becoming commonplace in smaller cars.

10. Don't drive

Not a popular thing to say on a car site, I know, but the fact is that if you can avoid driving, you'll save gas. Take the train, carpool, and consolidate your shopping trips. Walking or biking is good for your wallet and your health. And before you get in your car, always ask yourself: "Is this trip really necessary?"
